I plan to do some bluegill, trout fishing and maybe a little bass fishing. I have never bought a flyrod before so I am pretty clueless. I do have some rods that my dad gave me, but I would rather not use them, they are very old and have sentimental value. I’m just not sure what the best sized rod would be to use for all of these fish. From what I can gather online it seems a 6 weight is a good size for bass, but is that too much for the small brook trout I want to catch?

HI Larry, a six weight sounds about right for your needs. You could always go with a fairly stout 5 weight as well. You won’t have trouble catching bass or brook trout with most 5 weight rods.

Thanks, I just picked up a 9 foot 5 weight from my friend. Its a St. Croix, feels pretty good and I got a good deal on it. Might be light for bass but I plan to spend most of my time on brook trout and bluegill anyway.
